PAUL WANG (piano teacher & young steinway artist)
A Vancouver native, Young Steinway Artist, Paul Wang is a dedicated and compassionate pianist and a certified young piano teacher of RCM. Founded the Lower Mainland Music Students Association. Paul currently studies piano with UBC professor Dr. Corey Hamm as well as Steinway artist Prof. Ilana Vered. Previous teachers include Dr. Sasha Starcevich, Nicholas Rada and Toni Meyer.
In masterclasses, Paul has worked with distinguished artists such as Boris Berman, Jerome Lowenthal, Ursula Oppens, Boris Slutsky, John Perry, Marina Lomazov, Lei Weng, Ian Jones, Dan Wen Wei, Pavlina Dokovska, Marina Lomazov, Ian Parker, James Brawn, Meng-Chieh Liu, Nataliya Trull, Jinha Park, Hee-Sung Joo, Chun-Chieh Yen, Yoonie Han, Gregg Pauley, and more.
Paul has had a number of notable performance and accomplishments in his young career, including performing at Carnegie Hall when he was 6 and 7 years old. He has showcased his talents in prestigious venues across Canada, the United States, and Italy. Paul has collaborated with many orchestras such as the Philharmonia Northwest Orchestra in Seattle, the Perugia Orchestra in Italy, the Coquitlam Youth Orchestra in Coquitlam, BC and the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra.
Paul has garnered numerous awards in national and international competitions. He has represented local Kiwanis festivals at Provincials numerous times. At the age of 9, Paul won the First Prize at the Canadian Music Competition in the 10-year-old category, and Paul is a youngest winner at 2019 Seattle Young Artists Music Festival Concerto Competition. He also achieved 1st Place at the US Music International Grand Prix, Young Artists Award at The GOCAA International Piano Competition, and Coquitlam Youth Orchestra Competition. Notably, Paul won Overall Awards at both of the 2023 Steinway Piano competition and Steinway Spirio/r Concerto Competition, he earned the Best Interpretation Compulsory Piece and Second Prize at the 2023 International Junior Orléans Piano Competition in France. Paul was also a laureate at the international competition Piano Neuchâtel Val de Travers 2023 in Switzerland. Recently, Paul won 1st Place at Chopin Foundation of the United States Northwest Council 2024 Concerto Competition and will be performing with orchestra in Seattle later in 2024.
As a young pianist, Paul has focused on love, understanding, and cultural exchange, actively giving back to the community through charitable events and fundraisers. Since May 2022, he donates his teaching income to LGH Foundation monthly and organizing a personal charity concert in 2017. Click for donation. As the founder of the North Shore Young Artist Club, Paul organized online concerts for seniors to promote social interaction during the pandemic. With years of musical experience, Paul deeply understands that music is a language that can unite people across cultural, racial, and linguistic boundaries, creating beautiful memories and experiences. Inspired by the club, Paul established the Lower Mainland Music Students Association in 2023. The association promotes musical growth and education among high school students, while also organizing charity concerts and community service events. Currently, the Lower Mainland Music Students’ Association is entirely run by high school students and boasts over 130 members, 10 clubs, and continues to grow steadily.
Apart from music, Paul has a wide range of various interests. He excels at school with an overall average of 97%. Additionally, he enjoys reading, history, and earned the 2023 John Locke Global Essay Competition's Distinction Award. Paul is also a member of RCA Rowing Canada Aviron and Deep Cove Rowing Club.
